WATER AS A MIRROR TO THE CITY: WATERFRONTS

This year, the workshops had the title „Water as a Mirror to the City: Waterfronts” and were part of the Year of the Vistula celebration. The leitmotif was revitalising waterfronts and water management in land reclamation. There was a cruise on the Bydgoszcz – Toruń route. The workshop participants first took water trams on the River Brda and then, from the Fordon district of Bydgoszcz, took the riverboat Wanda on a cruise up the Vistula to Toruń. The results of waterfront revitalisation in Bydgoszcz and Toruń were to be seen first-hand on route.

The subject presented at the conference by Prof. Anna Janucht-Szostak of the Poznań University of Technology, entitled „Waterfronts: what they are, good practices, methodology,” was especially interesting. Also worth attention was a presentation by Anna Fikus-Wójcik and Agnieszka Rózga-Micewicz of the Gdańsk Development Agency on the ways in which Gdańsk is turning towards the water, using the potential of waterfront public spaces in the revitalisation process. Anna Rembowicz-Dziekciowska of the Bydgoszcz Municipal Urban Planning Studio presented Bydgoszcz Waterfronts. There were also examples of waterfront case studies in US or Western European cities.
